More money than sense

It’s a grim subject but one that many of us bloggers have been inspired to write about in the last 48 hours. It’s also a story about a brand I previously had a lot of respect for – MAC.

They’ve come up with a new collection in collaboration with the fashion house Rodarte, which was inspired by a road trip from El Paso to Marfa, Texas – and specifically by the Mexican town of Ciudad Juárez. So far so what, you might think. Continue reading…

Do the right thing

The bottom of my wardrobe was like the sink in Withnail & I. It was full of matter. And frankly I was too scared to go in and investigate. But I did, and thankfully, there were no rotting tea bags, fossilised ashtrays or three-year-old plates of beans on toast in there. Well, only a couple.

What there was, however, was enough knackered, unused or unwanted electrical beauty type things to fill Withnail’s entire kitchen. I’m talking straighteners, hairdryers, curlers (don’t laugh), epilators… you know the type of stuff. It always seems like a life-changing purchase until the following week when you’ve realised it’s too sore/doesn’t work/who needs a ‘cool shot’ anyway? Continue reading…

The real deal: part two

Last week I told you about how Essentials magazine think real women need celebrating and want to focus more on them. I even managed to pin down a real woman (a.k.a. my mum) for a mini interview.

Well, there’s a second part to this. Real women come in all shapes, sizes – and colours. So, to tie in with the arrival at the lovely BeautyBay.com of K By Beverley Knight – a brand new make-up range targeted specifically at women with darker skin-tones – I have another interview, with my dear friend Mona. (That’s not her in the picture by the way, it’s a random lovely lady from Essentials magazine.) Continue reading…

The real deal

What makes a real woman? Are you one? Am I? Who knows. I’ll tell you who is though, and that’s the oft-mentioned Product Placement tester that is my mother (a.k.a. Ma). She’ll go all shy when she reads this (and that isn’t her in the photo, it’s a picture of another random mum given to me by Essentials mag, because she’s too shy for that too.) Continue reading…

On this day in history

February 10th. Yes, that’s right, the day in 1846 that the Mormons began an exodus west from Illinois. The day in 1979 that ‘Do Ya Think I’m Sexy?’ by Rod Stewart peaked at Number 1 in the charts. And the day in 1990 that Perrier pulled its product from the shelves due to benzine contamination. All hugely significant moments in history, and yet nothing to compare with what happened on this day in 2009. You’ve guessed it: Product Placement was born.

So I hope you’ll excuse the lack of beauty related chat today. Normal service will be resumed soon. But I just wanted to take the opportunity on this very exciting first anniversary to thank everyone who has bothered to read my ramblings over the last year. Continue reading…

I’d just like to thank…

Awards are quite the money-spinner these days. Whether you work in ball-bearing production or bantam-rearing, they’ll be an annual awards ceremony to attend. It will have a naff name, like The Wow Factor Awards, the tickets will be astronomically expensive, and it will involve a three-course meal with some sort of melon/ham-based starter. And not only will nobody outside your industry know about it, the ‘celebrity’ speaker won’t have heard of it either.

So hoorah for the first Product Placement Awards! (I never use exclamation marks so you’ll understand how exciting it all is from just that.) No melon/ham-based starter, admittedly, but neither will you have to watch Sandi Toksvig have her photo taken with all the winners as they clutch statuettes that make those from a local teen judo club look impressive. All you have to do is read on, and find out what (in my humble opinion) have been the best products of the last year. I’ve done categories and everything. Drum roll… Continue reading…

Let’s get it over with

Whisks

Who likes admin? Not me. But unfortunately there are times when it just can’t be avoided. No matter how hard you try, and how important cleaning out the utensil drawer in the kitchen may suddenly seem, sometimes you just have to sit down and jolly well do your paperwork. I’m afraid that now is one of those times. I’ll make it quick, and then we can get on with all the lovely beauty stuff I’ve got lined up for the coming months.

Unless you’ve never visited Product Placement before, you’ll have noticed it’s looking a bit different this week. Well, thanks to my good friend Lee at What You Having For Your Tea, Product Placement has had a bit of an overhaul and I think you’ll agree it’s looking pretty swish.
