TECU_1Oh how I miss those heady days of having a newborn. DVD Box Sets, endless cups of tea, sacks of Minstrels justified by breastfeeding. But then something very sinister happens to these little bundles of flailing limbs. They start to crawl. Which is frightening enough, but not as frightening as the latest development in my offspring. Yup. He can walk. Chaos is now two feet tall and shouts ‘POSTMAN PAT’ a lot. (Well, PA-MA-PA. Christ, he’s fifteen months, what d’you want from him, a thesis?)

No longer interested in actual toys, he runs around the house with arms outstretched like a zombie finding things to destroy. Usual my things. Actually, usually my nice things. Just this week he has rubbed Petit Filous into my White Company slippers, emptied my Jo Malone Bath Oil into his own bath, and horror of horrors, tipped the contents of my make-up bag into the bin.

And while I was there on my hands and knees, a vision in yellow rubber gloves as I picked through used tea bags and nappies to find every last item, I thought of you. Not because of the stench, no. Because of how flippin great I realised my make-up was, and how I wanted to tell you all what I was currently using. My shallowness knows no bounds, but it got me through the whole bin situation so what the heck.

Firstly, base. I have been quite the devotee this past year of MAC’s Mineralize Satinfinish SPF15 Foundation (£21) and quite frankly, I may go back to it. But a recent foray into something a little more natural hasn’t been a waste of time. I’ve been trying Perricone MD’s No Foundation Foundation (£41) and the texture is lovely. It’s described as a ‘multi-purpose product that provides natural translucent coverage, corrects skin undertones, instantly smoothes fine lines and boosts skin’s natural moisture throughout the day, all the while delivering antioxidant benefits’. The only down side is that it doesn’t smell that great. Or maybe that was the bin.

On my eyes I’ve been using one of the Body Shop’s Metallic Eye Definers (£6) in Shimmering Steel, a lovely intense bluey-grey which glides on so easily it’s simple to do a quick line on the upper and lower lashes for a no-bother daytime look. A quick coat of Maybelline Pulse Perfection Vibrating Mascara (£14.67 at Boots) finishes it off. And after ignoring the vibrating function for the first few goes I relented and realised it’s actually not a gimmick and does help you get right into the base of the lashes and separate them out.

My other current favourite that I am very glad I saved from the landfill (even if it did need an antiseptic wipe run over it) is Clinique’s gorgeous Vitamin C Lip Smoothie Antioxidant Lip Colour (£13.50), which comes in a lovely clicky pen format like Touch Éclat. Not too sticky, subtle colour, tastes nice, actually does your lips good… I will need to ask myself very seriously why I will ever use anything else. That’s after I’ve asked the toddler what he has done with my blusher…
