Nothing is more depressing than hearing myself say to my stepdaughter “Oooh, that/ they/ those were trendy/ cool/ the fashion when I was younger/ young/ your age”. But I find myself saying it ALL THE TIME these days, as she parades through the house in what essentially my wardrobe from circa 1985. Except it’s nicer.
But, instead of turning my nose up, as someone as fashion-cautious as myself should, I find I am suddenly excited about purchasing a snood. Top Shop has a lovely one in charcoal grey, don’t you know? And rather than poo-pooing the prospect of owning a pair of ankle boots for the second time round, I have been browsing Office online with a glint in my eye.
Maybe we’ve forgotten how bad we looked. Maybe the clothes are actually nicer. Or maybe it’s because, with about 20 years more sartorial experience, we know we’ll do it better this time.
